The holiday season comes with a lot of waste. While we all want to do the right thing, if you’re throwing something into the blue bin just hoping it’s recyclable, you’re causing more harm than good. Unfortunately, most holiday waste is not recyclable. Here are some examples.
Recyclable: Gift boxes, envelopes, cardboard boxes (broken down), non-coated paper
NOT Recyclable: Ribbons/Bows, wrapping paper, tissue paper, holiday cards, gift bags, packing peanuts, sticky gift labels, tree decorations, Christmas lights
Since most items are not recyclable, consider alternative solutions to trash-creating traditions. Get creative with gift wrapping by using things like your children’s artwork, old maps, or even fabrics. Or eliminate the wrapping problem all together and instead of gifting “things”, make a donation to the recipient’s favorite cause. Every little bit helps.
