If 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we have to be prepared for everything. So here’s your guide to the 12 Days of Preparedness. While this isn’t written to a catchy tune, it is much more important that those geese-a-laying.
- Stock up on water and food. Have enough in your emergency kit for everyone in your household (pets included) for at least three days.
- Add extra face masks and antibacterial to your emergency kit. Because, 2020.
- Get flood insurance. Everyone in Chesapeake should have it. Visit FloodSmart.gov for information.
- Know your evacuation zone. Find it at KnowYourZoneVA.org
- Make a plan. What would you do if you had to evacuate your home? Or if you had to stay in your house for days on end? Be sure to consider pets, babies, and any special needs folks in your circle.
- Put a winter safety kit in your car. Include at least a blanket/warm clothing, snacks, flashlights, and an ice scraper.
- Test your smoke alarms and check your fire extinguishers.
- Get a first aid kit for your home and your vehicles.
- Invest in rechargeable battery packs for your mobile devices. Regular batteries are a must, too.
- Prepare your finances so that you have money set aside in the event of an emergency and always try to have cash on hand (if an emergency cuts off electricity, you won’t be able to use a credit card).
- Sign up for Chesapeake Alert so that we can reach you in the event of an emergency. Visit CityofChesapeake.net/ChesapeakeAlert to sign up.
- Check on your neighbors & loved ones. Do they have a plan? Do they have an emergency kit? Do they need you to check on them during an emergency?
