Calling all readers who are 55 years young or more - are you tuned into the Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s “55 & Better” program? If not, you’re missing out! A great way to stay young as the years go by is to stay active and involved and the 55 & Better program helps you do just that.
The Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department holds events all throughout the City (dances, barbeques, athletics) but they also have specific facilities that are dedicated to senior activities. The Rokeby Center (1709 Rokeby Avenue) hosts a variety of programs most days of the week. Get physical by joining the Walking Club or learning line dancing or Zumba. Be a little more laid back with ceramics or photo preservation. There’s also the Portlock Senior Center (1114 Freeman Avenue) which features pool tables, card playing and cookouts. Some activities do have a small fee but many of them are completely free.
Learn all there is to do through the “55 & Better” program by visiting CityofChesapeake.net/55andBetter. You can also just stop by one of the senior centers or the Visitor’s Center (1224 Progressive Drive) when they’re open.
