Chesapeake is a very safe place to live, much thanks to the Chesapeake Police Department, but it’s very easy to take that for granted. Theft of items from vehicles is something that can happen in any area of the city. Keep your possessions safe by making it difficult for criminals to get what they want and making it look like there’s nothing they’d want to get!
Making it difficult for a criminal to break into your vehicle is step one. Lock your car doors. Even if your car is in your driveway. Park in well-lit areas. Put anything of valuable out of site, preferably locked in your trunk.
Step two is make it look like there’s nothing worth stealing from your vehicle. Hide any obviously valuable items like purses, wallets, or shopping bags. Take your valuables inside with you when you exit the car. Keep in mind that even if you’re reusing a department store shopping bag to hold your lunch, a would-be thief couldn’t know the different between a necklace and a tuna sandwich. All they see is the department store shopping bag.
If you see someone trying to break into a vehicle, do not approach them. Call the police and be ready to give them a good description of the person. For more crime prevention tips, follow the Chesapeake Police Crime Prevention Unit on Facebook.
