Crash Reconstruction Unit
Address: 304 Albemarle Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322 |
Accident Investigators are responsible for the detailed documentation and fact-finding examination of major vehicular crash scenes. Police Officers who have specialized training in accident investigation may be called to closely examine the scene of motor vehicle crashes where extremely serious injuries or loss of life occur.
The Accident Investigators can measure and document evidence such as skid marks, scuff marks, gouges, scratches, fluid spill patterns, glass disbursement patterns and many other physical clues to the crash. Measurements of the roadway and vehicles may also be taken. Statements from drivers, passengers and witnesses are collected and reviewed by the Accident Investigators. The Accident Investigators may perform various tests to determine other information as needed for each different crash scene.
Utilizing the specialized training, the Accident Investigator may be able to analyze the physical evidence, testimonial evidence and other crash scene information to determine the probable cause of the crash, which may lead to prosecution if a violation of law has occurred. The goal of the Accident Investigations Unit is to document contributing and causative factors in order to improve highway safety.
