Residential Zoning Districts

Enclosures for Less Than Five Dogs (dog runs):Kennel

  1. RE-1, Residential Estate district, no setback.
  2. For all other residential districts, the enclosure must be set back twenty-five (25) feet from any exterior property line, and fifty (50) feet from any existing residential building located on an adjacent lot that is zoned exclusively for residential use.

Kennels:

(Definition: Kennel. Any place used for the breeding, boarding or keeping of five (5) or more dogs over the age of four (4) months.)

  1. Commercial kennels are not permitted in any residential zoning district.
  2. Private kennels are permitted only in the RE-1, Residential Estate district.
  3. Kennels must be located five hundred (500) feet from the lot line of any property zoned or used for residential purposes.
  4. If the structure is soundproofed (dogs cannot be heard off the property), the setback can be reduced to two hundred (200) feet.
  5. If the kennel is proposed to be located closer than two hundred (200) feet, a Conditional Use Permit is required (applications can be obtained from the Planning Department, second floor, City Hall Building).
  6. No kennel may be located in the established front yard.
  7. Kennels must be a minimum of forty (40) feet from the rear property line and ten (10) % of the width of the property in addition to the above requirements.

A-1(Agricultural) C-1(Conservation) and M-1, 2 and 3 (Industrial) Zoning Districts


Enclosures for Less Than Five Dogs (dog runs):

  1. A-1, Agricultural district, no setbacks.

Kennels:

  1. Commercial kennels are permitted in the A-1, Agricultural and M-1, 2 and 3 Industrial districts. Commercial kennels in the A-1 district must have a minimum area of five (5) acres, and must not be located within a major subdivision.
  2. In addition to the above, commercial kennels must also meet all the requirements for private kennels in A-1 and C-1 districts listed below.
  3. Private kennels are permitted in A-1 and C-1 districts, and must meet the following requirements:
    1. Kennels must be set back five hundred (500) feet from any lot line of any property zoned or used for residential purposes.
