Waste Management Division
The Waste Management Division of the Public Works Department provides refuse collection once every week for over 60,000 residences in Chesapeake. Over 100,000 tons of refuse is collected annually. The City's Solid Waste is transported to the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) transfer located on Greenbrier Parkway, or the regional Refuse Derived Fuel Facility located in Portsmouth (SPSA facility locations). For waste collection information and services, call your Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 757-382-CITY (2489). Chesapeake residents may dispose of residential solid waste at SPSA facilities.
SPSA Service Alert
In observance of the Juneteenth Holiday, the SPSA Greenbrier Transfer Station will be open Saturday, June 19 from noon - 4 p.m., for Chesapeake residents only. Additionally, the regularly scheduled household hazardous waste event will be rescheduled to June 26.
Battery Disposal Alert
All battery types are prohibited in residential, commercial and industrial recycling streams being processed at TFC Recycling facilities. Do not place batteries of any type in your blue curbside recycling bin, brown curbside standard waste bin, or in any municipal or common area recycling or waste receptacles! Batteries placed into recycling streams have resulted in fires and serious damage to recycling facilities and hardware, and could present serious danger to recycling center staff. Chesapeake residents can safely dispose of batteries at a SPSA Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility or during an event where SPSA receives waste items, such as Chesapeake Recycles Day.
