Independence Day Holiday Schedule: All City offices, courts, and community centers will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. The Chesapeake Visitor Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. All Chesapeake Public Library branches will be closed on Sunday, July 3, and Monday, July 4. Normal operating schedules will resume on Tuesday, July 5.
Recycling Update: The City of Chesapeake has ended its recycling contract effective immediately. The City’s Waste Management Division will now begin collecting materials in the blue bins as trash. Beginning on Tuesday, June 28, both brown and blue bins will be collected as waste on normal City collection schedules. We understand this transition has raised many questions, so please see our FAQ page for details.
Tax Deadline Extended: At their May 24 meeting, Chesapeake City Council extended the payment deadline for personal property taxes, real estate taxes, and the stormwater utility fee to June 30, 2022. All bills have been mailed so if you haven't already received yours, you should soon. You can pay your bills in a variety of ways - online, by drop box, by mail, or in person.
Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing: It can be unnerving to see smoke come out of your drains but it could mean the Public Utilities Department is working in your area. Smoke testing is done to find leaks and damage in the City's side of the sewer system. If smoke gets into your home, that means there's damage on your end as well and it's time to call a plumber. Learn more about the process and view the smoke testing schedule.
