Your City, Your Voice

Burgundy graphic with loud speaker image and "Make Your Voice Heard"

Community input in government decision making doesn’t stop after Election Day. It continues all throughout the year and every person in Chesapeake can play an important role. From inviting City employees to your civic league meetings, to calling the Customer Contact Center to report a concern, to attending a public hearing, there are a variety of opportunities to make your voice heard.

City Council meetings provide excellent opportunities to let your elected officials know your thoughts on any given topic. They meet the second, third, and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. On the second and fourth Tuesday, you may speak on any City-related topic of your choosing. On the third Tuesday, you must keep your comments specific to items on the agenda. In order to speak, you must register before 6:30 p.m. the night of the meeting. You can do so by calling the City Clerk's office (757-382-6151) or by filling out a comment card in Council Chambers before the meeting begins.

Planning Commission meetings are also a great way to get involved. The Commission meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. You can speak at this meeting by signing up in person the night of the meeting. You can also submit your comments online and they will be forwarded to the Commissioners electronically.

Don’t let the formality of a meeting in City Council Chambers intimidate you. These are your meetings and you belong there!
