Historical Services is a division of the Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
Our mission is to raise awareness, interpret and preserve the city's vibrant history through maintaining city-owned cemeteries, memorials and other historical assets, as well as organizing special events, multimedia, educational programs, tours, interpretive signage, and other exhibits.
In addition, we provide resources and guidance for research requests from the public.
The Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment
The Cornland schoolhouse was relocated to its new site at the Historical Village at the Dismal Swamp
To accomplish these responsibilities and community preservation efforts, we work closely with advisory boards such as the Chesapeake Historic Preservation Commission and the South Norfolk Historic Architectural Review Board. Historical Services also partners with community groups, state and federal agencies, and other organizations to make history come to life in Chesapeake and make it an exceptional place to live, learn, work, farm and play.
