A Message from the Fire Chief

Chief Edmund ElliottOn behalf of the over 450 members of the Chesapeake Fire Department (CFD), please allow me to welcome you to our website! The CFD is a unique and diverse group of dedicated men and women on a mission for the citizens of the City of Chesapeake:

  • To Protect and Improve your Quality of Life By Providing Responsive and Caring Service.

While delivering services in the safest, most efficient manner practicable, we continually strive for the highest level of customer satisfaction possible.

Of the more than 34,000 calls for assistance to which we respond to each year, 74% are for emergency medical services (EMS). We provide both basic and advanced life support levels of EMS. In addition to emergency medical, fire and rescue responses, our Community Risk Reduction Division oversees inspections, arson investigation, bomb threats, plans review and life safety education programs as well.

A vital component of the Fire Department is our Office of Emergency Management. Its primary responsibility is to prepare for, mitigate and recover from any natural or man-made emergency that might threaten the City of Chesapeake. Our Mobile Integrated Healthcare team keeps our community safer through health and wellness education and providing healthcare resources in the "out-of-hospital" environment.

The Chesapeake Fire Department's Special Operations include Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, Marine Incident Response, Foam Firefighting and Communications teams which all work together to form an all-hazards approach to emergency preparedness and response.

Additional programs offered by the CFD include Child Safety Seat Installations, Fire Station Tours, Fire Extinguisher Training, Safety Inspections, Public Fire Education, and the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). Through these programs, our proactive approach to public safety and citizen involvement is best represented.

If you are visiting, I welcome you to Chesapeake. If you are a resident of our City, please stop by your neighborhood fire station and meet your City's firefighters and medics. We are proud to be your Fire Department and stand ready to serve you whenever and wherever needed!
