CITY TO DEDICATE RESTORED WORLD WAR II PLAQUE
CHESAPEAKE– The Chesapeake Public Library will host a dedication ceremony on Thursday, October 8, for the recently restored plaque honoring individuals who attended South Norfolk High School and served in the armed forces during World War II. The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the plaque’s new home, the South Norfolk Library.
The plaque was removed from its original home at the high school during a renovation. It eventually found its way to Raymond Harper, noted local historian, who stored the plaque for a number of years. Mr. Harper and Chesapeake’s Director of General Services William Broome, partnered to have the plaque restored and rededicated. Following meetings with the Chesapeake Mayor’s Commission on Veteran’s Affairs, it was determined that a South Norfolk location was the ideal choice and the Library stepped in to offer space.
A number of individuals listed on the plaque are expected to attend the rededication ceremony, while others will be represented by family members. The public is invited to attend this free event and help the City again recognize the contributions our residents made during World War II.
