CITY CALLS FOR VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION

CHESAPEAKE — At its meeting Tuesday night, the Chesapeake City Council adopted the Water Conservation Ordinance appointing City Manager William Harrell as the Emergency Administrator. City Manager Harrell has called upon all residents to voluntarily practice water conservation techniques. Voluntary conservation is requested for all water customers, which includes those who receive water from Norfolk, Portsmouth and the Northwest River/Lake Gaston.

The action was in response to the City of Portsmouth enacting their water conservation ordinance and calling for voluntary conservation.  Chesapeake purchases water wholesale from Portsmouth to supply customers in Western Branch and Deep Creek north of Military Highway.  Chesapeake is required by contract to follow conservation levels at least as stringent as Portsmouth adopts.

Well water is not restricted.  However, the City requests that customers using well water post a sign indicating that a well is in use.

Examples of voluntary conservation techniques are:

  • Repair leaks in faucets and toilets.
  • Install a low-flow showerhead.
  • Keep a container of water for drinking in the refrigerator.
  • Wash only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Place mulch around shrubs to conserve moisture.
  • Clean driveways and sidewalks with a broom.
  • Wash vehicles at a car wash facility that recycles water.

Chesapeake water customers who need more information or additional water conservation tips may call the Public Utilities Department at 382-6401. Check the City of Chesapeake web site at CityOfChesapeake.net for updates and additional water conservation information.
