CHESAPEAKE TO CONSIDER WATER CONSERVATION MEASURES

CHESAPEAKE- The Chesapeake City Council will consider taking the first step toward enacting water conversation measures at its meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at 6:30 p.m., at Chesapeake City Hall.  On the agenda is the designation of City Manager William E. Harrell as the City’s Emergency Administrator, which is required in order for the City to respond to the lack of rainfall in the region with water use restrictions.

The designation of the City Manager as Emergency Administrator allows him to take specific water conservation measures for the preservation of public health, safety and welfare.  It is not known at this time what level of conservation will be enacted or when.  Because Chesapeake purchases water from Portsmouth and Norfolk, the City must follow any restrictions imposed by those cities.

“Chesapeake residents understand how precious our water supply is and how important it is to protect it through conservation,” said Chesapeake Mayor Dalton S. Edge. “I thank the citizens is advance for joining this effort.”

Chesapeake Public Utilities Director Jim Walski will update the City Council on the status of Chesapeake’s water sources at the City Council Work Session on October 23, at 4:45 p.m., in the Human Resources Training Room on the 4th Floor of City Hall.

“Water conservation is always good practice,” said City Manager Harrell, “The lack of rainfall this year is making it especially important to be mindful of water use.  We are keeping a close eye on our water resources and will respond as necessary to make sure public needs are met.”

The City web site, CityofChesapeake.net, includes tips and suggestions for conserving water year-round, including ideas that can be used in yards, kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home.  For information or questions about the City’s water, call the Public Utilities Department at 382-6352 or 382-6401.
