CITY TO DEDICATE VETERANS' MEMORIAL

CHESAPEAKE - The City of Chesapeake and the Mayor's Commission on Veterans' Affairs will dedicate the Chesapeake Veterans' Memorial in a ceremony Monday, November 11, beginning at 3:00 p.m., in front of City Hall. The memorial commemorates the service and sacrifice of Chesapeake citizens and loved ones who are serving, or have served, in all branches of the military.

Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-04). In addition, former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Robert Walker and members of the Mayor's Commission will speak. The ceremony will conclude with the formal dedication of the memorial, which is made up of a marble structure and more than 1,000 individual memorial pavers.

Citizens have the opportunity to purchase memorial pavers to recognize a veteran for their service. A brass plate is attached to the paver, inscribed as desired, and becomes a permanent part of the memorial. Pavers are still available for purchase, either at the dedication or by contacting the City Clerk's office at 382-6151.

To accommodate the ceremony, Shea Drive and Polly Miller Drive, within the Municipal Center complex, will be closed from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11. Parking for the ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be available in the east and west parking lots at the municipal center.

For more information, contact Richard Cole in the City Clerk's office, 382-6151.
