VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINES

Monday, October 6, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.
for the General Election to be held November 4, 2008

The deadline to apply to register to vote, or make changes (name and/or address) to your voter registration is MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. If mailing, the application must be postmarked by this date.

Voter Registration Applications or changes in name/address postmarked or received after the deadline will be held and processed after the election.

  1. print the form,
  2. read the instructions accompanying the form,
  3. fill out the requested information on the form carefully,

VIRGINIA VOTERS’ RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(ABBREVIATED)

As a Virginia Voter, you have the following rights:

  • To be notified whether your voter registration application has been accepted or denied.

  • To vote if you have registered at your current address at least 29 days before Election Day.

  • To receive help from the Election Officials if you are unsure about anything relating to the voting process.

  • To be given a demonstration of the voting equipment.

  • To have your vote voided BEFORE IT IS CAST if you think you voted incorrectly. You will be given another chance to vote.

  • To enter the name of a write-in candidate if the candidate of your choice is not on the ballot.

  • To have a ballot brought to your vehicle if you are 65 years of age or older or disabled.

  • To have an Election Official or other person help you vote if you are disabled or unable to read or write.

  • Anyone who helps you to vote must do so according to your instructions, without trying to influence your vote, and may not in any way tell others how you voted.

  • To vote even if you have no identification (ID) with you.

  • To vote a Provisional Ballot if your status as a qualified voter is in question.

  • To bring you minor child, age 15 or younger, into the voting booth.

  • To vote if you are in line by 7:00 p.m.

  • To cast an absentee ballot if you are qualified to do so.

  • You cannot be denied the right to vote if you are eligible to do so.

As a Virginia Voter, you have the following responsibilities:

  • To keep you voter registration information up to date

  • To show your ID at the polls. If you have no ID with you, you may still vote if you sign an Affirmation of Identity form.

  • To request help if you do not know how to use the voting equipment, have questions about the voting process, or if you are disabled or unable to read or write.

  • To check you ballot for correctness BEFORE you cast it.

  • To know that once your ballot is cast, you CANNOT be given another ballot even if you think you voted incorrectly.

  • To ask the Election Official to call the Voter Registrar’s office BEFORE you leave the polling place if you have problems regarding your eligibility to vote or the casting of your vote.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where will I vote?

When you register to vote your registrar will send you a voter information card. The card will tell you the name of your precinct and where you will vote. You must always vote in the precinct where you live. If you have moved, changed your address or are unsure of your voting precinct, you can check your status online, or call the Voter Registrar's office at (757) 277-9797 for more information.

What If I Have Moved or Changed My Name?

You may change your information (name and/or address):

  • In person at our office or at the DMV

  • By mail by completing a new voter registration application

  • If mailed, Voter Registration Applications or changes of address/name must be postmarked no later than the deadline specified for each election.

  • By completing the back of your voter registration card
