Traffic Engineering

The Traffic Engineering Section is responsible for the planning and design of a safe and efficient roadway network in Chesapeake.

The Traffic Engineering Section designs traffic signals and control devices, maintains a computerized traffic control system, studies traffic patterns and provide site impact analysis, regulates speed limits, investigate neighborhood traffic concerns, oversees work zone traffic control, and reviews subdivision and constructions plans.

The Traffic Engineering Section also operates the City's Smart Traffic Center.

Street Lighting

Traffic Engineering is responsible for the design and installation of the City's street lighting system. There currently is an inventory of over 21,000 streetlights with an annual operating cost of over $2 million.

The City has a petition process for the installation of streetlights in existing neighborhoods. Any citizen requesting a new streetlight will be sent a petition that requires 51% approval of the residents who would be directly affected by the new light.
