Public Communications Coordinator
for Mayor's Youth Day 2006

Ashley Allen

Hello, my name is Ashley Allen and I am a senior at Deep Creek High School. I served as the captain of the Marching Hornets Colorguard and I am also very involved with my church's youth ministry. Last year, I had heard a lot from the seniors about how great Mayor's Youth Day was and as a result this year I made sure I signed up. I was assigned to the Public Communications department and wasn't quite sure what to expect. When my mentor told me that the main part of her job is the reporting aspect of communications, I was really excited. The day turned out to be great! I opened a real news segment and interviewed the head chief of the fire department 'out in the field' (as the reporters say). Over all, this day turned out to be a wonderful experience I will never forget.

After I graduate high school in June, I hope to attend James Madison University. I plan to major in math with the intentions of becoming a high school math teacher. This day has planted a seed for reporting, so if I ever change my mind about teaching I know where to go. I would encourage anyone to participate in Mayor's Youth Day even if the jobs aren't exactly what they are interested in because it is an amazing learning experience!
