Bird Watching

Northwest River Park is part of the "Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail" as designated by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries!

There is year round birding at Northwest River Park. Starting with the spring birds, such as the ground nesting ovenbird with its ‘teach, teach’ call to the red-eyed-vireo with its call of ‘look up, in the tree, see me.’ The woods come alive with nesting birds in the summer, such as blue birds, robins, great-crested-fly-catchers and pee wees as well as many others. Moving into the fall and winter especially at our feeders are chipping fox sparrows, song sparrows and dark-eyed juncos. Flying over head may be seen red-tailed, cooper’s, merlin or other assorted hawks as well as an occasional bald eagle. Down at the river great-blue-heron, osprey, mallards, wood ducks, pied-billed bribes or buffle-heads such as the female buffle head (pictured) may be spied. Come on down to the park, and happy birding.
