Parks & Recreation Department - Northwest River Park

Dr. Dean Bohon Fragrance Garden

Fragrance Garden Dedication
October 4, 2006

The Dr. Dean Bohon Fragrance garden is a quiet shady spot located next to the ranger station at Northwest River Park.  The garden is in full bloom in the spring with azaleas,  camellias, wild honeysuckle, and numerous species of wild flowers such as mouse eared chick weed.  Contrasting form and texture are achieved through the use of plants such as Fatsia and Leather Leaf Mahonia.  The garden is a great place to sit and reflect upon the day in the shade of  Native Hickory, Pawpaw, Oak and Red Buckeye.

Dr. Dean Bohon’s
Contributions to Northwest River Park
& the City of Chesapeake

Dr. Dean has given his time, knowledge and talents to the City of Chesapeake’s Department of Parks and Recreation for the past 15 years.  He has dedicated his time and expertise to educating the citizens and debunking myths through his classes, seminars, canoe trips and informative hikes.  Dr. Dean is known throughout the city for his cutting-edge knowledge and entertaining presentation style.  He utilizes his contacts to stay abreast of field research which he in turn passes along to park visitors; even presenting materials before they are being taught at local universities!   We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable volunteer.

Dr. Dean utilizes the entire park to educate the public, but one of his favorite spots is the area now known as the Fragrance Garden.  He makes a quick stop there during every hike he does at Northwest River Park, to educate the public on poisonous plants.  In the spring and fall when Dr. Dean does his flower hikes, he can often be seen on his knees looking for that perfect example of “mouse eared chick weed.”
