Parks & Recreation Department - Notable Yards 2008

HICKORY. Merv and Nina Troyer. 504 Woodards Ford Road.

Merv and Nina Troyer own several golf courses—and their stately home makes you feel as if you are driving up to a beautiful golf course.  Their driveway is long and curving and the front lawn is lush and green, with stately, mature trees throughout the property.  The Troyers have lived in their home for 22 years.

Merv even planted and lovingly tends a putting green in his backyard.  “I just love to take care of my lawn,” said Merv.  “I think you have to have good equipment to really do a good job.”

Their landscape is both formal and family-friendly and comfortable.  “We have a little play area for our grandchildren,” said Nina.  They also have a beautiful outdoor living area with a multi-level deck and a pool with a slide.

A beautiful fountain and tasteful statuary can be found throughout the landscape.  Bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and birdbaths invite wildlife into the yard.  “I love to sit by the window and drink my coffee and watch the birds,” said Nina.  Several varieties of trees and plants are included in their yard, such as roses, sweet potato vines, primroses, caladiums, lavender, herbs, crepe myrtles, oak, poplar, and maple.

In the whimsical garden, colors abound—a multi-colored bench, whimsical statuary, colorful bird houses, and an old window that has been turned into a work of art, colorfully painted with butterflies and flowers and hung along the fence.

In the blue garden, the color blue is highlighted—a blue bench, blue gazing ball, blue accessories, and blue flowers. Martha created a pyracantha espalier (a plant that is trained to grow in a particular shape against a wall) in a square shape on the fence behind her garden. Pictured left to right: Martha Webb (homeowner) and Jean Pfaehler (Mayoral Appointee to the Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council).
