DEEP CREEK. William Spaur and Ruth Bizot. 719 Wood Duck Lane.
Owning a home on the Old Intracoastal Waterway in Deep Creek fits in perfectly with the lifestyle of William Spaur and Ruth Bizot, who enjoy boating, history, and nature. “Bill is taking the boat to Annapolis this afternoon,” said Ruth. The couple keeps their boat at a pier and boat dock behind their home.
Contest judges were particularly impressed by the large, native trees that have withstood several hurricanes, such as live oaks and bald cypress. “I am particularly fond of this long leaf pine tree that we bought at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens,” said Bill. “For years, long leaf pines were one of Virginia’s biggest crops. They used them to make ship masts.”
The couple solved the problem of how to plant a long, narrow side yard by filling it with colorful plants, such as rain lilies, black-eyed Susans, Shasta daisies, calla lilies, day lilies, and more. Bill installed a wide, decorative brick border that can be used as a narrow walk-way. Bill also designed and made a brick-topped table for their patio. “It’s great,” said Ruth. “It won’t blow over during strong winds. Bill has a real eye and talent for brick projects.”
“I like to experiment with different flowers and plants,” said Ruth. “I baby them and then move them to a suitable location when they get bigger.”
