Parks & Recreation Department - Notable Yards 2006

DEEP CREEK. Fred and Jean Wood. 2301 Trescott Way.

Fred and Jean Wood have created a joyful, colorful garden with sentimental reminders of loved ones. Located on a corner lot, the front yard is symmetrical and reminiscent of an English garden. The backyard is a riot of color, and the plantings are grouped in a less structural fashion. Pathways between and through the beds lead the visitor from one interesting area to another. The beds are bountiful with daisies, lilies, irises, impatiens, morning glories, petunias, and other colorful flowers and plants.

The couple have planted flowers and provided feeders that attract large numbers of hummingbirds to the yard. “We have hummingbirds with pot-bellies”, said Fred.

Originally from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the charming couple has moved several times—but have carried plants and embellishments from home to home. “When we moved to Chesapeake, Jean had me drive two van loads of plants here,” said Fred.

One rose bush has been grown from one originally planted in the 1860’s. Another bed is planted with antique impatiens originally grown in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

“We used to have a shade garden,” said Jean. “However, we lost 30 trees during Hurricane Isabel.  We had to adapt to a sunny garden.”
