Chesapeake --- Clean and Green

CEIC logo

The Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council (CEIC) provides citizens a way in which to participate in helping to Keep Chesapeake Beautiful. Chesapeake’s citizens have a chance to get involved at the grassroots level in helping to keep our city clean and green.

Volunteers put into action the phrase — Think Globally, Act Locally. Last year 6,983 volunteers got involved in CEIC projects and removed 114,230 pounds of debris from Chesapeake’s waterways, streets, parks, and other public areas. Over 2,030 trees have been planted during Arbor Day celebrations over the past several years. 102 groups are participating in the Adopt-A-Spot/Highway program. YOU can make a difference! Individual citizens or groups or organizations can get involved in CEIC projects to encourage citizens to promote litter prevention, recycling, beautification, and general environmental awareness.

Tree planting

Energetic students from Great Bridge Intermediate School and Deep Creek High School ROTC planted the beautiful new KAB/Miracle-Gro Showcase Garden at the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail.

Chesapeake is an enthusiastic part of the Keep America Beautiful (KAB) system, a behavior-based approach to litter prevention and voluntary recycling. As a KAB community, Chesapeake — through the projects of the CEIC — relies on cooperative partnerships of businesses, government agencies, and civic and neighborhood groups to bring practical solutions to solid waste and beautification problems.

Eighteen volunteers are appointed by the Mayor to serve on the governing board. However, thousands of other volunteers are actively involved in CEIC projects and sub-committees.  Visitors are welcome to attend CEIC monthly meetings. Meetings are held at the River Crest Community Center on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon. Since lunch is served, it is a good idea to call (382-6411) before coming to the meeting. No regular meeting is held during the months of July, November, or December.
