Where can I apply for Day Care Services?
Applications for Day Care services are taken at the Chesapeake Department of Human Services, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5 PM.
How can I apply for Day Care Services?
Come in to the agency and complete a service application. The application is brief and can be obtained at the receptionist desk.
What are the eligibility requirements for Day Care?
The requirements are as follows:
- A person has to be receiving Temporary Assistance For Needy Families (TANF).
- A person has to be employed, in school &/or in training towards employment.
How will I know if I am eligible for Day Care?
You will receive a notice from the Day Care Unit informing you of the approval or denial of your application.
Am I eligible for Day Care Services if I no longer receive TANF?
You may be eligible for Transitional Day Care Services if you are employed and meet the income eligible guidelines. If you are determined to be eligible for Transitional Day Care, you will be responsible for a 10% monthly co-pay based on your gross earnings. Transitional Day Care is a twelve month program, effective the following month after TANF closure.
Are Day Care Services available to those persons who have not ever received TANF?
Yes, Day Care Services may be available to you through the Planning Council. You may contact this agency at (757) 627-3993 and ask to have your name placed on the waiting list for Chesapeake. You will be notified by letter and your application will be processed. If you are within the income eligible guidelines, you will be eligible to receive Day Care services and you will be responsible for a 10% monthly co-payment based on your gross earnings. This service is available for up to five years.

These providers are regulated as they are licensed by the State Department of Social Services or certified by the Planning Council.
Can a family member provide Day Care for my child(ren)?
Yes, family members can provide day care services. They must first be cleared by a state police background check and a child protective service background check. There are fees for these applications; $20.00 for the state police check and $5.00 for the child protective service check. These must be done on all persons in the household who are 18 years old and older.
