File of Life

The Chesapeake Fire Department adopted a program designed to expedite medical care in our communities. This is a program that has been tested in some of our neighboring cities. The program is designed to provide needed medical information to responding medical personnel.

This information is supplied by the resident on a card that fits into a red magnetic pouch that is placed on the resident's refridgerator. The reason it is designed to be affixed to the refridgerator is that most everyone has one and it is easily located by the responders.

Inside the pouch is a card that is to be filled out by those in the household who have a medical condition and may be in need of special assistance. There should be one pouch for each potential patient within the residence. On this card is such information as name, age, gender, social security number, and date of birth. There is a section on this card for a brief medical history. Finally a space is provided for current medication and dosages. As a side note it is good to tell us where all pertinant medications can be located.
