Drug court are specialized courts that provide close monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation to offenders with substance use disorders.

The City of Chesapeake was the 23rd locality to establish a drug court in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The small pilot program opened in August of 2005 and serves 5-8 participants.

The drug court program is operated entirely with existing resources. The core partners are the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Public Defenders Office, Community Services Board, Probation & Parole District Office #31, Baby Steps, Inc. and the state Department of Rehabilitation Services.

The drug court is part of the Chesapeake Circuit Court and serves defendants who are on probation for non-violent felonies.

The Chesapeake Drug Court Steering Committee, which is composed of agency representatives and citizens, oversees the pilot and the Treatment Team, composed of core partner representatives, manages the participants in association with two Circuit Court judges.

Volunteer pportunities are available including service on the Steering Committee and assisting the Treatment Team with developing resources for participants and their families.
