History
The Committee was formed in 1982 by then Mayor Sidney M. Oman, who felt that Citizens with disabilities in Chesapeake should be involved in the decision making process that affects them.
Purpose
The purpose of the Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities is to assist people with disabilities in achieving more independent lives through promoting the awareness of disabled people's needs to the Mayor, City Council, City Administration and the community at-large. The Committee also provides advice to the public and private sectors on the challenges facing the disabled in matters of employment, housing, education, travel, and the use of facilities open to the general public.
Membership
The Committee is comprised of a cross-section of the population of the City of Chesapeake. The members of the Committee include persons with disabilities and representatives of various agencies with service responsibilities.
Goal
The Committee is concerned with the quality of life available to citizens with disabilities. The Committee is dedicated to making city and private programs and services accessible to all citizens. To accomplish this task the Committee obtains and provides information to citizens as well as government agencies.
Meetings
The Committee holds open meetings to discuss and resolve problems faced by citizens with disabilities. These meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at Major Hillard Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy, 23323.
