Youth Services Community Outreach Activities

Career Day

Careers - graphic signCity department and agencies staff outdoor tables that offer descriptions of jobs/careers and describes a field of expertise to youth that partake in the event.  This is an opportunity for the City to get involved in showing the youth of Chesapeake that there are career opportunities and encourage them to take advantage of them. 

This event takes place during the summer.

Community Series of Events

boy with basketballThe Community Summer Series of Events is a unique opportunity to partner with key stakeholders throughout the community to promote the positive development and enrichment activities for youth.  The series of events is a way to strengthen community relationships, as well as inform residents of city-wide resources, programs and services.  Activities include:  Movie Night, Basketball Tournament, Career Day, and a Field Day. 

The activities take place over a four (4)-week span during the summer.

Holiday Giving Project

The Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) members collect clothing, toys and food for a Chesapeake faimily.  The Salvation Army provides the needs of the family to the Committee. 

The project takes place during the month of December.


Norfolk State University (NSU) Youth Day

Norfolk State University logoThe Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) coordinates sign-ups for local youth organizations to attend the NSU games. 

This activity takes place in the Fall football, and
Springbasketball.

Relay For Life

Relay for Life logo The Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) members form teams to support the American Cancer Society Relay For Life fund raising and public awareness campaign.  Over a 24 hour period, one relay team member walks or runs around a track in 30 minute shifts.  Each year the team has a fund raising goal.

 

School Supply Drive

school suppliesThe Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) collects and distributes school supplies to the Chesapeake Public Schools Title I Program.  City employees, CYC members, and citizens donate the supplies and/or funds.  This program works with low-income children to improve their reading and math skills. 

The drive takes place from August – September.

Thanksgiving Project Drive

The Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) collects and donates a Thanksgiving food basket to a needed family.  A family is obtained from the Adopt-A-Family Program sponsored by the Salvation Army, supporting local families in need of food during the holiday season. The CYC members provide a food basket to a Chesapeake family.

 

Winter Hats & Gloves Project

winter hats and gloves The Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) collects and distributes hats & gloves to a Chesapeake Public School’s Title I Program.  City employees, CYC members and citizens donate the hats & gloves. 

The distribution of the hats & gloves are to elementary children, in economically-disadvantaged communities, during the winter months of the school year.
