Waste Management Division
The Waste Management Division of the Public Works Department provides refuse collection once every week for over 60,000 residences in Chesapeake. Over 100,000 tons of refuse is collected annually. The City's Solid Waste is transported to the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) transfer located on Greenbrier Parkway, or the regional Refuse Derived Fuel Facility located in Portsmouth (SPSA facility locations). For waste collection information and services, call your Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 757-382-CITY (2489). Chesapeake residents may dispose of residential solid waste at SPSA facilities.
CURBSIDE RECYCLING UPDATEThe City of Chesapeake has cancelled its curbside recycling contract, effective on July 1, 2022. No changes will occur to recycling until July 2022. Click here for more information.
WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICE ALERT
The City of Chesapeake will temporarily suspend new bulk trash and yard waste collection effective Tuesday, January 18, 2022, until further notice, due to ongoing staffing shortages. The City will not accept new bulk trash collection requests during this suspension, and residents should not place additional bulk trash or yard waste bags at the curb. This suspension will allow Waste Management to catch up on collection of items already at the curbside while working to hire and train new staff.
All items with an existing submitted bulk trash request will be collected as soon as possible -- please leave these items at the curbside. Residents may transport bulk items and other eligible waste to the SPSA Greenbrier Transfer Station or SPSA Regional Landfill in Suffolk. For hours of operation at SPSA drop-off locations, visit bit.ly/SPSAhours. There are no changes to brown automated bin trash collection service at this time. More information about the resumption of normal service will be released as it becomes available.
As a reminder, the City continues to offer attractive employment packages, including $2,000 sign-on bonuses, for new staff in the Waste Management Division. Information and applications are available online at https://jobs.cityofchesapeake.net.
