COVID-19: Mayor's Message
A message from Chesapeake Mayor Rick West
Our City, our region, and our nation are facing a challenge unlike any of us have experienced with the rising threat from the COVID‐19 virus. In response, we are being asked to add new terms to our vocabulary, such as "social distancing" and "self‐quarantine." This is a time of great uncertainty and anxiety for all of us, but I want to take a moment to assure you that the City of Chesapeake, and our community partners, are working hard to meet each new challenge.
City staff are working hand‐in‐hand with the Chesapeake Health Department, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, and Chesapeake’s many private healthcare providers to craft response strategies that will, hopefully, lessen the virus’ impact. As they say, though, the best defense is a good offense, and that starts with each one of us taking the time to practice good hygiene, including thorough and frequent hand‐washing.
We’ve already seen a number of large events, along with many of our City programs at libraries and community centers, cancelled in response to the call to limit close contact with others. While this is certainly disappointing for those planning to attend, the chance to stem the spread of the virus simply cannot be ignored. I hope you will consider this and seek ways to practice that new term, "social distancing," yourself.
I have been meeting with many of our local business leaders this week, and I have been impressed with the many creative ways they are responding to these challenges. From offering delivery services, to allowing customers to call in orders and then drive‐up to collect items, our businesses are finding ways to keep that all‐important distance working for everyone. If you are a business owner, I encourage you to think out of the box for ways to safely serve your customers.
Creative thinking, meeting challenges head‐on, and coming together as a community have been benchmarks for Chesapeake throughout our 57 year history. COVID‐19 is testing us like nothing before, but I am confident that Chesapeake can weather whatever this virus sends our way. Be well, be safe, and wash those hands!
