The height of hurricane season is officially here. September is historically the most active month for named storms. We’ve said it before but when we’re talking about life saving preparations, it’s worth it to say it again. It is absolutely critical that you are prepared.
Find your evacuation zone at KnowYourZoneVA.org (or call our Customer Contact Center at 382-2489 for help) and then make a plan. If you’re in Zone A or B in particular, have a plan for where you would go if an evacuation is ordered for your zone. Call your family and friends in the area to see who is in a Zone C or D and make plans to head to their home during an evacuation. You might not even have to leave Chesapeake, making it much quicker and easier for you to return home when it's safe to do so.
Do not rely on public shelters this year. Physical distancing will be incredibly difficult. Plus, public shelters will be more basic than ever before, with the need for you to bring all your own needs, including food, for your entire group for several days. It’s a much better option to make a plan now to stay with family or friends nearby instead of relying on a public shelter.
