We’re entering the coldest months of winter and, unfortunately, the most likely time of year for home heating fires. If you use a space heater, your odds of a house fire are even greater. In fact, space heaters account for 4 out of 5 home heating fire deaths. Here are a few tips to keep you safe while you’re trying to keep warm.
- Keep at least 3 feet clear around your heater. This includes children who should never play around a space heater.
- Never lay anything on top of your heater.
- Always plug it directly into an outlet, never an extension cord.
- Turn it off when you leave the room.
If used properly, a space heater can be a useful addition to your home heating but it should always be used with care and caution. Stay warm and stay safe.
