We talk a lot about preparing yourself and your home for hurricane season but what about your pet? Have you thought about what Fido or Fluffy might need in the event of an emergency? Here are some things to add to your emergency kit that are pet specific.
- Food, water, and medication (try to have enough to last them at least 72 hours)
- Vaccination records
- A picture of yourself and your pet to prove ownership
- Familiar items like treats or toys to help reduce their stress
Keep in mind that in the event you have to go to a shelter yourself, the City does usually open a shelter just for pets. They generally accept domestic animals, with the exception of snakes which are not permitted. You should be prepared to bring food, a towel, any medication, and preferably your pet’s crate or cage to the shelter with them.
