The season of giving is officially here! If you’re looking to give of your time or money to help the less fortunate, here are a few ways to do so in a safe and effective way.
If you’re looking to volunteer, the Chesapeake Area Shelter Team is a great option. Every week a different church hosts the homeless overnight and helpful hands are always needed. You can email Sam.Cast@abbalist.org for more information.
If you’d like to donate items for the homeless, consider everyday items that can be carried in a backpack such as toiletries, socks, and small snacks. Check with a local church for suggestions about where to give these donations or drop them off at the We Care Resource Center for the Homeless, located at 1468 S Military Hwy.
If your plan is to donate money, be careful about the charity you choose. Do your research first using websites like give.org, charitywatch.org, or just a general internet search. You might also want to contact the charity directly to see how much of your donation goes to the program you support. Beware of pop up “charities” that only accept money through gift cards or wire transfers.
