Saturday, November 17, 2018 is Chesapeake Recycles Day. We’ll be at Tidewater Community College on Cedar Rd from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s a great opportunity to bring your household hazardous waste, electronics, and sensitive documents for proper disposal. There are limitations to what we can collect, though. We do not accept plastic bags (most grocery stores will recycle them for you), tube TVs, or tires. And there are several limitations when it comes to shredding.
If you plan to bring items for shredding, you’re limited to 3 copy paper boxes or paper grocery bags worth of sensitive documents. Be sure that those boxes or bags contain paper ONLY. It’s not uncommon for us to see boxes of paper that also contain pens, cell phones, even clothing. Not only can these items damage the shredder, causing delays and possible cancellation of shredding at the event, but they can also cause fires. Batteries and lighters are commonly found mixed in with shredding and these are particularly dangerous. Please go through your shredding thoroughly before bringing it to our event to make sure it is paper only.
It’s also not uncommon for our shredding truck to fill up at these events. For that reason, we ask that you be sure that you’re shredding sensitive documents only. Keep it to documents that contain account numbers, social security numbers, health information, and other details that are specific to you or your family. You do not need to shred magazines (just remove the address label and recycle it), holiday cards, or your child’s homework from 2nd grade.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the event this Saturday!
