News, Information, Events & More
Cinco is a two-year-old Labrador retriever who trained for years before being chosen for the Chesapeake Fire Department and being training another 6 weeks with his handler, Deputy Fire Marshal Whit Gibbs as an ATF accelerant-detection canine.
Cinco was not always an ATF dog, he was previously a guide dog. However, that is not where he would show his full potential. Because he showed a lot of drive he was chosen to go to the ATF and join the ranks of law enforcement. Cinco, through extensive training, is certified through the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to sniff for flammable substances that may have been used in a fire. When Cinco finds something or alerts on an ignitable liquid, he will sit down and is fed by his handler, Deputy Fire Marshal Gibbs. Not only is Cinco great at his job, he is also very friendly with people, especially children.
On December 6, 2019, Cinco was sworn in by Chief Elliott as an official member of the Chesapeake Fire Department.
