The Department of Human Resources provides employee relation services to City employees and supervisors on work-related matters. Staff members are available to answer questions regarding policy, discuss options to address concerns, and to determine and provide the applicable resources to resolve conflict. If you have any questions about the information on this page, you may contact the Department of Human Resources at 757-382-6492.
In order to effectively accomplish the work of the City, it is necessary for open communication to exist between supervisors and their employees. Toward that end, the City of Chesapeake has a Grievance Policy and Procedure designed to provide a formal means to resolve problems which may arise in connection with the employee's working environment. Employees are encouraged to discuss work-related problems with their supervisors before using the formal Grievance Procedure.
Who is eligible?
All regular part-time and full-time employees are eligible for recognition through the Service Award Program.
When is an employee eligible to receive a Service Award?
Employees who have continuous service to the City for a period of 5 years are eligible for recognition. Recognition is also given to employees with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, or more years of service on 5-year service plateaus. The employee's anniversary date must fall within July 1st - June 30th of the target year to be eligible for recognition the following spring.
How does the employee receive his/her award?
All gifts are shipped to the recipients' departments where supervisors/department heads coordinate for recognition. Employees with 25+ years of service can choose a gift from a catalog they receive from their supervisor/department head. Certificates are also awarded to eligible employees during departmental recognition.
Service Award Breakfast
In June of every year, a recognition breakfast is held at the Chesapeake Conference Center. City employees with 15+ years of service are invited along with their departments' representatives. During the event, department heads have the opportunity to recognize their employees and take a group picture with them. No gifts or certificates are awarded during the breakfast.
Who is invited?
The guest list for the breakfast includes The Mayor, Members of City Council, The City Manager and his/her staff, Department Heads, and all eligible City employees and their guests. (All employees with 25-years or more of service are invited with a guest.) The City-wide event usually hosts from 200 to 300 people.
