If you join the City of Chesapeake as a full-time regular employee, the City will provide a foundation of benefits for you.
This page provides highlights of specific aspects of the benefit program for full-time regular employees of the City of Chesapeake, such as retirement, life insurance, holidays, annual leave, sick leave, and paid time off. If you join the City, you will receive detailed descriptions of the benefit plans.
Planning for the future is very important, no matter how old you are. The City participates in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) and pays the employer portion of this benefit on your behalf. Five percent of an employee's gross income will be withheld for contribution into VRS. This benefit is available to full time employees who are not in Grant or Special Project positions. The City pays the total costs of regular life insurance coverage, which is through the Minnesota Life Insurance Company. You are covered up to two times your annual salary (rounded up to the nearest thousand dollars) for normal death and four times of your annual salary for accidental death. You are also covered for dismemberment.
This benefit is available to full time employees who are not in Grant or Special Project positions.
The City pays disability coverage for full-time employees covered by the Virginia Retirement System. The disability coverage differs based on whether the employee is in VRS Plan 1 or 2 or Hybrid Plan. Employees in VRS Plans 1 or 2 are provided employer-paid long term disability with 40% income replacement after a 180 day waiting period. Employees in the VRS Hybrid Plan are provided employer-paid short and long term disability with a seven day waiting period after satisfying one year of employment. Short term disability coverage begins with 60% income replacement and the percentage increases based on years of service. Long term disability provides 60% income replacement (80% for catastrophic conditions) after the employee has been out of work for 125 days. Long Term Care Insurance

Employees hired on or before December 31, 2013; as well as employees with prior service in the Virginia Retirement System under Plans 1 or 2 that was not disbursed; and employees in sworn public safety positions hired on or after January 1, 2014 accrue annual leave. Full time and regular part time employees hired on or before December 31, 2013; as well as employees with prior service in the Virginia Retirement System under Plans 1 or 2 that was not disbursed; and employees in sworn public safety positions hired on or after January, 2014 accrue sick leave. Regular full time employees accrue sick leave at eight (8) hours per month. Regular part time employees who work at least 40 hours per month accrue sick leave at a pro-rated amount.
Paid Time Off
Employees hired on or after January 1, 2014, excluding those with prior service in the Virginia Retirement System under Plans 1 or 2 that was not disbursed and employees in sworn public safety positions, accrue paid time off. The following chart represents the paid time off accrual rate per month:

*Accrual rate applies to 1) designated employees working extended shifts within a 24 hour operational unit; and 2) operational units which require working holidays in their regular work schedule, e.g. Animal Control Officers, Bridge Tenders, Toll Collectors, Water Treatment plant workers, Police Department (Sworn), Police Information Associates, Evidence Technicians, Emergency Dispatchers, Juvenile Services Counselors, Juvenile Services Cooks, Sheriff Department (Sworn).
