The Sister Cities Committee of Chesapeake, Inc. and the students of Deep Creek Central Elementary are proud to announce their participation in the Pen Pal program with our Sister City of Joinville, Brazil. Fifth grade Special Education teacher and member of Chesapeake Sister Cities, Inc., Kendal Hulce, has rejuvenated the program to promote lasting global friendships. Over 100 fifth grade students participated in the program developed around the series of books Flat Stanley.
Stanley is a little boy who accidentally flattened himself when a bulletin board fell on him while he was sleeping. Stanley decided to take advantage of the situation. He mailed himself in an envelope to his friend who lived far away and new adventures began. The students of Deep Creek Central Elementary did just that! They took Stanley on their adventures throughout the city and beyond highlighting historical places, daily living, and special places that make our city and country so unique. Through these letters the students were able to teach the students of Brazil about our American culture that we so proudly exhibit each day. The “little Hornets” are very excited for Stanley to return from Brazil and read about their pen pals in our sister city, Joinville.
