The Hampton Roads Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is a non-profit, voluntary organization which supports the care and dignity of persons with dementia caused by Alzeheimer's Disease and related disorders. This organization also offers assistance to their families and other care givers through quality programs of community-based support, information and referral, public awareness, education training, research and advocacy.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Committee Member: Try to place people according to their interest and training. Special need on Development Committee.

  2. Public Speaking: Training provided; times vary with requests.

  3. General Office: Receptionist duties, data entry according to ability.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provide relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its congressional charter and the fundamental principals of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Bingo Workers: Volunteers are needed to assist with Friday night bingo games.

  2. Blood Services: Drivers to pick up and deliver blood and blood products throughout the Mid Atlantic Blood Region. Blood Mobile Volunteers to work as greeters and canteen workers. Hours and days are flexible. Some weekend work available.

  3. Community Education Instructors: Instructors teach CPR, First Aid and Babysitting Classes to the public. Training required

  4. Disaster Action Team: Members respond to emergency calls as needed providing disaster assistance to victims of fire and other disasters. Team members are on call one week out of four.

  5. Youth Corps: Mentors to supervise youths 12 years and older for community service projects. Projects include Clown Corps, Community Clean Up, visiting hospitals and nursing homes and sending care packages.

The Chesapeake Community Services Board provides a comprehensive system of mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services to accommodate the current and future needs of Chesapeake citizens.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Community Partners Program: 8-10 Individuals needed to be volunteers in partnership to assist persons who are mentally challenged, yet desire opportunities for inclusion in social and recreational activities. Must be over 18 years of age and must make a commitment to the program for one year.

  2. Transportation Coordinator: To transport agency clients to and from clinic, doctor, dentist and other appointments. Must have valid driver's license. Time commitment 2 to 3 hours per week. Orientation provided.

  3. Step Higher Mentors: To facilitate development of youngsters, age 12 through 19 via tutoring, cultural/social events and special skills coaching.

  4. Teen Power Volunteer Facilitator: Need to act as group facilitators. Must have at least GED and experience working with youth in an educational and/or recreational setting.

Provides trained advocates to work with abused and neglected children ages birth-18.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Advocates: Investigation; reporting and monitoring children involved in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for abuse/neglect. Includes report writing, oral presentation of material and court appearances.

  2. Marketing/Public Relations: CASA Program willing to work as a team with experienced media person willing to donate services to promote program.

The Chesapeake Humane Society is dedicated to the prevention of any and all forms of cruelty to all animals by every legal means. Programs goal is to promote general welfare of all animals and conduct education of public awareness. Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Humane Educators: Volunteers are needed to present the Society's Humane Education Program to pre-school and school age children, as well as adult organizations.

  2. Fundraising: Volunteers are needed to plan and carry out fundraising events as well as participate in events already established.

  3. Photographers: To take pictures of shelter animals for publication in various media.

  4. Newsletter Delivery: Volunteers with their own transportation are needed to deliver newsletters on a quarterly basis.

Chesapeake Pals Program mission is to reduce the trauma of victimization for domestic violence victims and encourage victims to cooperate with and participate in the Criminal Justice System.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Domestic Violence Advocate: Monitor cases, make referrals to area agencies and community resources as needed and provide crisis intervention throughout the clients' involvement with the court.

Children's AIDS Network for Interfaith Involvement (CANDII)

The CANDII Program was organized to improve the quality of life for children living with HIV/AIDS. Program staff and volunteers work to provide access to comprehensive medical, educational, developmental, social, financial and mental health services for children and their families in order to promote a normal family lifestyle.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Pre-school Playgroup Volunteers: Assist staff with children up to the age of five who attend playgroup; volunteers play with children and assist with activities and meals. Volunteers needed Monday through Friday.

  2. Special Buddies: Match with a younger child with whom they are willing to spend at least two hours a week. Six months commitment needed.

  3. Office Volunteers: Assist with various tasks including receptionist duties, copying, filing, typing and mail. Volunteers needed weekdays only.

  4. Public Education and Awareness: Volunteers give presentations to groups concerning CANDII and HIV. Training provided.

Citizens Committee to Protect the Elderly is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization offering assistance programs to residents of nursing homes and their families.

Volunteers Opportunities:

  1. Friendly Visitor Program: Volunteers are needed to provide companionship for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities and support to their families.

  2. Office Volunteer: Needed to coordinate and implement community service projects inside nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

  3. Register Nurse: Assist families with choosing a nursing home or assist in resolving problems within the facility.
