Chesapeake Animal Control Unit is the Animal Control Agency for the City. Also operates the Animal Shelter for the City. Enforce applicable laws and ordinances. Responds to citizen complaints regarding animal related matters.

The Chesapeake Community Services Board is a twelve member, community-based board appointed by City Council that provides mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services for Chesapeake citizens. These programs are supported by local, state and federal tax dollars as well as by client fees. Fees for services provided to citizens are based on their ability to pay.

Offers a number of service and benefit programs for senior adults including Adult Protective Services, transportation, companion services, assessment for alternative living arrangements (nursing homes, adult care residences, adult foster homes), food stamps, medicaid and fuel assistance. The programs listed below are open to all ages, however many of those who use the programs are senior citizens.

  1. Smoke Detector Program: Distribution and installation of smoke detectors in homes of senior citizens, physically challenged, and person's with low income. Weak or missing batteries can also be replaced in existing detectors if needed.
  2. S.C.A.N. Program: (Special Care and Needs) Special medical needs are filled out on a card, which is then mailed to us. The information is entered in the dispatcher's computer. Thus, whenever "911" is called by the applicant from their home, the information appears on the dispatcher's computer.

Virginia Cooperative Extension provides educational programs based on research-based information from Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. Broad program areas are: Agriculture and Horticulture, Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth. Some examples of specific educational programs include Master Gardner Volunteer Training, Money Management, Nutrition and Healthy Eating, Human Development, and 4-H Club Volunteer Training. Seniors can enroll in informal classes, serve as volunteers, and consult a professional staff member by phone or receive newsletters by mail.

    We provide Victim/Witness Services to all victims and witnesses of crime regardless of age. We see victims through the Criminal Justice System and apply for funds to compensate victims for any counseling, medical, funeral, and burial expenses that may be incurred as a result of a crime.

    1. Elderly and Indigent Assistance Program (EVAP) Provides assistance to seniors and indigent victims of crime with losses up to $200.00. You must meet program criteria to qualify.
    2. Check and Respond Everyday (CARE) Care is a twenty-four hour computerized phone service designed to check on the homes of seniors and handicapped to verify that they are safe. This service is offered free of charge to residents of Chesapeake. For additional information see our web site.

The Waste Management Division is offering smaller (64 gallon) refuse containers to elderly residents and people with disabilities who have difficulty handling the standard (96 gallon) containers. Elderly and disabled residents, who currently receive refuse collection service from the city may exchange the larger container for a smaller one by calling the Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 382-CITY (382-2489).
