There are more than 74 parks in the City of Chesapeake, with many located within a 2-mile radius of the South Norfolk Revitalization Focus Area. These parks offer a wide range of recreational opportunities from the most active use of sports and outdoor fitness equipment, walking trails, and playgrounds, to more passive areas for relaxation and respite. Many have historical significance, honoring local heroes from past and present, and provide features for reflection and remembrance to those who served our country.
South Norfolk parks are also event venues for the annual South Norfolk Parade & Picnic in the Park at Lakeside Park, the Rolling on the River Food Truck series, Movie & More series, and other educational and engaging programs at Elizabeth River Park. These parks offer a way for residents to connect with nature and each other and provide opportunities for a healthier lifestyle. Recreational opportunities are available for dogs too with walking trails and a designated dog park at Elizabeth River Park.
Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism offers a variety of programs and classes for all ages, including therapeutic recreation and seniors or "55 & Better".
Check out the Peake Discovery Guide to learn more about these classes, programs and activities, as well as information on Chesapeake's parks, open spaces and facilities.
The annual South Norfolk Parade & Picnic in the Park is a celebratory community event on July 4th that features a parade, musical entertainment, paddleboat rides, vendors, children's activities and food. This parade, sponsored by the South Norfolk Civic League and Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism, has been a South Norfolk tradition for over 39 years. Enjoy the regular park amenities and more during this special event.
Rolling on the River, a food truck event that occurs on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from April through mid-September, provides a variety of food trucks, a DJ, and lawn games and activities for the children. Elizabeth River Park is the perfect backdrop for an evening on the water with friends and family.
