Due to safety concerns, the Chesapeake Public Works Department will permanently close the 22nd Street Bridge to motorists and pedestrians effective Wednesday, August 1, at 1:00 p.m. The section of Seaboard Avenue that travels underneath the bridge will also be closed until the replacement bridge is completed. A detour will be marked.
A recent bridge inspection revealed significant deterioration to the structure of the 80 year old bridge. In an abundance of caution, City staff determined that the bridge should be closed ahead of schedule. A replacement project is already designed, funded, and is in the process of being awarded to a contractor. Construction on the replacement bridge will begin in September and will take approximately 15 months to complete.
