Biography - Amar Dwarkanath
Mr. Amar Dwarkanath, appointed as Interim City Manager of the City of Chesapeake, Virginia on April 1, 2012. He has served as the City’s Deputy City Manager for Operations and Water Resources since February, 2003, overseeing the Departments of Development and Permits, Planning, Public Utilities, Public Works, the Fleet Services Division, and as liaison to the Department of Agriculture.
Dwarkanath’s career in the City of Chesapeake began as a Draftsman in 1969. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and returned to civilian life in 1972 as a Draftsman in the Department of Public Utilities. He was further promoted to Design Engineer and Utilities Engineer. In 1980 he was promoted to Engineering Administrator in the Department of Public Works and held that position from 1980 to 1981. In 1981 he was promoted to Director of Public Utilities and held that position until his promotion to Deputy City Manager in February, 2003. Under Mr. Dwarkanath’s leadership, the City’s safe yield of water supply resources has increased from 7.5 Mgd to 40.0 Mgd enabling Chesapeake to have a robust economic development program and a superior quality of life for its residents.
Dwarkanath is credentialed as a Registered Professional Engineer in Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and Math from the University of Mysore, India in 1963 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bangalore University, India in 1968.
Dwarkanath holds memberships with the International City Management Association, the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.
