City Attorney Named New Virginia Law Foundation Fellow
We are proud to announce that City Attorney Jan L. Proctor has been selected to join the Virginia Law Foundation Fellows Class of 2015.
Through philanthropy, the Virginia Law Foundation promotes law-related education, the rule of law, and access to justice throughout Virginia. To encourage and recognize excellence in the practice of law and public service, the VLF created the Fellows of the Virginia Law Foundation. Induction ceremonies are held annually at the January meeting of the Virginia Bar Association, in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Virginia Law Foundation has provided over $23 million in support of the groundbreaking Rule of Law Project, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, Lawyers Helping Lawyers, and scores of other projects.
The City Attorney is the chief legal advisor of City Council, the City Manager, and all departments (excluding the Department of Education), boards, commissions, and agencies of the City in all matters affecting the interests of the City; has management and control of all law business of the City; institutes and defends all legal proceedings to protect the interests of the City; attends City Council meetings; prepares ordinances and resolutions; draws or approves all bonds, deeds, leases, contracts, or other instruments to which the City is a party; and has such other powers and duties as assigned by City Council.
