Storm Drain Marker Program

Water that flows into storm drains is not treated. It flows from the drain into the nearest body of water, eventually making its way to rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. Stormwater that enters these drains collect sediment from our streets and parking lots, which hurts natural plants and wildlife in our waterways.

In conjunction with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality permit requirements to educate the public about stormwater pollution, several localities purchased 5,000 medallions to place in their respective municipalities. A stenciling program was started in the City of Chesapeake about 10 years ago with painted stencils on storm drains containing a "no dumping" message to residents. In 2009 we implemented metal, round blue medallions that have a lifespan of 15-20 years. These medallions are attached by local civic organizations and volunteers to the top of the catch basins in neighborhoods, near schools, hospitals, libraries and any other high traffic area in an effort to educate residents about the importance of doing all we can to prevent pollution from entering our sensitive waterways.
