Water Quality Reports
The Federal Safe Drinking water Act (SDWA) sets the standards and this annual water quality report is one of the provisions of those standards. Please take a few minutes to review this very important information and know that reliability, quality and affordability are at the heart of our mission in Chesapeake Public Utilities.
Backflow Prevention
One of the ways Chesapeake Public Utilities keeps your drinking water safe is through the Cross-Connection Control Program. The Program prevents untreated wate or other substances from getting into the public water system. A cross connection example is the homeowner's landscape irrigation system and the public water system.

Get to Know Chesapeake Water
- Chesapeake has two state of the art water treatment plants. The Northwest River Treatment Plant uses conventional treatment and reverse osmosis. The Lake Gaston Treatment Plant uses an ultrafiltration process. Operators test the water many times a day to make sure the processes ae working optimally.
- In addition, certified water quality laboratory personnel run many types of tests on the process water and the water from customers' homes and businesses. The technicians use high-tech instruments like atomic absorption and gas chromatography, as well as wet chemistry to determine what the water contains.
- Monthly Updates of Trihalomethane (THM) Analyses Flushing Notices
Routine flushing helps maintain the water quality in the distribution system. Advance notice of scheduled flushing is given to citizens in affected areas whenever possible. This operation has a possibility of causing discoloration to your water. This is considered normal. non-harmful, and should clear within a few hours.
