Dispatcher Trainee Position Listings
Dispatcher Trainee positions are posted when positions are available through the City of Chesapeake's C.L.I.C.K. job application process (link below). Eligibility applicants are ranked based on a skills performance test, an oral interview process, employment history and a review of background information. The top-ranked positions on the list are used to fill vacancies.
Note: BOTH the Police Dispatcher Trainee Application AND the City of Chesapeake C.L.I.C.K application are required when applying for this position. They should be submitted as close together as possible and normally within a few days of each other. Failure to submit both will result in disqualification from the hiring process.

Dispatcher Trainee will be eligible to advance to a Dispatcher I upon successful completion of all training requirements.

Dispatcher I - $31,819 (upon completion of the Basic Dispatcher Training Program, which includes classroom and on-the-job training)
Basic Description
The Police Department employs highly motivated individuals to train for the Emergency Communications Center. Individuals selected for the position will be trained to dispatch police, fire, rescue, and animal control personnel in response to emergency and non-emergency situations using various communication systems. This position requires the ability to work in a confined environment wearing headsets, which restrict physical movement in the work area, and sitting and viewing computer displays for extended periods of time. Candidates must have the ability to perform as a team player, work under pressure, and be available to work all shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. See other requirements and disqualifiers below. Possess a High School diploma or GED

Pass a dispatcher job skills related test (no prior dispatching experience is required, it tests decision making, multi-tasking, memory recall, data entry, typing skills & speed, oral comprehension, information processing, cross referencing, etc.)

Pass an oral interview

Pass a background & polygraph investigation
