The primary function of the Selective Enforcement Radar Unit is the reduction of traffic deaths, injuries and accidents through the detection and apprehension of traffic law violators within the City. This is accomplished through the use of Radar and selective enforcement techniques with special emphasis given to high accident locations, complaint areas and areas found to have a high percentage of motorist who violate traffic laws.
The Chesapeake Police Department utilizes unmarked vehicle for use in selective enforcement efforts with Radar. With the unmarked police vehicles and state of the art Radar units, motorist who violate the speed limit in the City of Chesapeake are often apprehended. The unmarked vehicles used for working Radar are also equipped with special audio-video recording units, which document the traffic stop, officer's contact with the violator, D.U.I. sobriety tests and other details of the event. These recordings can be used for court purposes or for reviewing each traffic stop. The Selective Enforcement Radar Unit investigates hundreds of citizens' complaints each year and works Radar in our many school zones, called Operation Slowdown, to enforce the 25 MPH speed limit.
